The Steam Next Fest is now underway and that means we’ve got an awful lot of game demos to plow through in a very short amount of time. One early standout I’ve run is a metroidvania called Tales of Kenzera: Zau, a story about a shaman in the land of Kenzera attempting to reclaim his father’s spirit. Tales of Kenzera: Zau was first revealed at the 2023 Game Awards: it’s the debut project from a new studio headed up by Assassin’s Creed Origins voice actor Abubakar Salim.

Gameplay in Tales of Kenzera: Zau is familiar: Running, jumping, and sliding across a multilevel 2.5D landscape, with pauses to do battle with various sorts of fantastical creatures and, of course, the occasional boss fight. It’s fast, smooth, and accessible even for non-metroidheads: Zau wields an arsenal of upgradeable ranged and melee combat powers but a “relaxed” gameplay mode keeps fights from becoming too overwhelming, and while it recommends a gamepad I found the mouse and keyboard controls perfectly fine…

Let’s begin with a brief recap of the current state of play at Intel. For starters, despite bold promises to regain technology leadership, it remains miles behind TSMC (Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company Limited) in chip manufacturing and indeed is increasingly relying on TSMC to manufacture its latest and future CPUs, such as Meteor lake, Lunar Lake and Arrow Lake.

Meanwhile, it’s losing market share to AMD in server CPUs, Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X Arm-based chips are a real threat in Intel’s largest consumer market, laptops, Intel’s Arc graphics effort has been a bit of a flop so far, and now its last two generations of desktop CPUs are badly broken.

Most recently, Intel announced some very poor financial results and decided it needed to fire another 15,000 employees after already trimming 5% of its workforce last year, a move that CEO Pat Gelsinger branded “some of the most consequential changes in our company’s history.”

Nvidia has been in touch to let us know that the original release notes for the RT Overdrive mode were misleading. In fact, the new path-tracing goodness will run on any GPU with hardware ray tracing, including Nvidia’s original RTX 20-series and AMD’s RX 6000 and 7000 graphics.

As we explain below, given that the RTX 4090 is dragged down to just 16 fps running the new eye candy natively and without DLSS goodies, don’t get too excited if you have older RT-capable hardware. The frame rates almost certainly aren’t going to be pretty.

Whether or not action RPG Dungeons of Hinterberg can be considered a cozy game is definitional. The traditional cozy game is relaxing, pastel-hued, and likely centered around quaint, repetitive gameplay that reassures and calms the player. Stardew Valley for farming; A Short Hike for strolling; Dorfromantik for tile-laying.

Hinterberg’s dungeon delving and monster slaying do break the mold a bit, but you’ll be doing both with a gentle, cartoonish art style swaddling you. And with a significant amount of the game dedicated to solving puzzles in picturesque environments, the comparison inevitably presents itself.

There’s no gore in Dungeons of Hinterberg, and the violence is stylized, taking place against gooey, inhuman mobs that feel more like the creatures from Jeff Smith’s Bone than wild animals. If you’re anything like me, you have two desires: The creation of an international brotherhood of man and a version of The Witcher 3 that tells the tale of Zoltan Chivay in a recklessly customisable amount of clothing. It’s my delight to inform you that both dreams are closer to realisation than ever: CD Projekt has announced a release date for the full version of The Witcher 3’s REDKit. It’s coming on May 21 via Steam, but you can use it across different versions of the game. 

If you’re almost certain this happened almost a decade ago, you’re thinking of the MODKit. The Witcher 3 got modding tools all the way back in 2015, but CDP promises to make Geralt more malleable than ever with tech “based on the same set of tools that were used by our developers to create the game.” That’d be the REDKit, which “should allow for nearly limitless freedom in modding.”

HBO’s The Last of Us has finally unveiled its Abby and it’s Kaitlyn Dever, the actor known for her roles in Booksmart, No One Will Save You, and that other Naughty Dog game you may have heard of, Uncharted 4.

“Our casting process for season two has been identical to season one: we look for world-class actors who embody the souls of the characters in the source material,” series co-creators Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann told Variety. “Nothing matters more than talent, and we’re thrilled to have an acclaimed performer like Kaitlyn join Pedro, Bella and the rest of our family.”
